15-17 August 2018, Irchel Campus, University of Zurich
LS2 collaborated with Life Science Zurich under the lead of Daniel Kiper to realize a project with advanced high school students.
The aim of this 2.5 day workshop was to give 20-30 students the opportunity to:
- select a topic-specific workshop in the field of the Life Sciences (4-5 different workshops will be available)
- interact closely with scientists from the respective field
- have guided laboratory tours
- do a little hands-on session within their chosen workshop
- actively participate in a Q&A session with scientists about studying natural sciences
...to at the end get an insight into the daily routine of a life scientist & decide for themselves whether they want to study a life sciences topic.
This project is kindly supported by the Platform Biology of SCNAT.
Please find below a collage of the successful event and the initial announcement flyer!

A hands-on workshop for PhDs and Postdocs 11-12 June 2018, Centre Loewenberg, Murten https://meetings.ls2.ch/patenting-2018
The course welcomed 33 PhDs from 8 different Swiss Graduate schools and 2 Postdocs at the Centre Loewenberg. All participants followed the general introduction lectures about “What is a Patent?”, “How to protect Intellectual Property” and “How to defend a patent?” with great enthusiasm and afterwards chose one of the 3 topics for their two workshop sessions. The three workshops with the speakers were really balanced and thus gave the participants an opportunity for lots of interaction and discussion with their workshops leaders from the Institute of Intellectual property in Bern, the Swiss Federal Patent Court, and with a lawyer from the University of Basel. The BBQ on the evening of the first day was appreciated a lot and allowed for good networking of participants with all speakers. On the 2nd day, lectures about “Ethics in Patenting” led to some good and critical discussions, while “Patenting in Swiss academic institutions” told them about the infrastructure at Swiss Universities to evaluate a patent. The 2nd part of the workshops was followed by the presentation of the results. As an organiser, I was amazed by the high quality of the presentations. The closing lectures gave an overview about how patent searches are done online and about career opportunities in the patent field.
We as organisers highly enjoyed to run this meeting and are certainly planning to do it again in 2020!
