During this visit, participants will explore the sitem-insel innovation ecosystem, learn about the MAS in Translational Medicine and Biomedical Entrepreneurship (MAS TMBE), meet the Sitem StartUp Club (SSC), and hear first-hand from a start-up founder who successfully completed the entire journey from research idea, through entrepreneurial training, to founding a company.

This visit is particularly tailored for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scientists who are interested in entrepreneurship, translational research, or founding their own start-up. 

Participation is free of charge, but places are limited to 20 LS² members only, so early registration is recommended.

David Penton Ribas will talk about his experience running a technology platform and how is often described as the exit from research. It does not have to be. In six years e-phac, the Electrophysiology Facility at UZH, went from one patch clamp rig to a portfolio of high-throughput electrophysiology combined with imaging, and soon sequencing, and from a service unit to a group with its own funding, a senior scientist and three PhD students. How do you build a facility nobody asked for, keep it funded, and end up with a research group? Six years condensed into the decisions that mattered.

Fanny Georgi will ask you - have you ever wondered who keeps academia running behind the scenes? Many graduates know little about the varied careers within academic institutions. Fanny highlights roles in the “third space,” where academic and professional work intersect. Moving beyond traditional faculty and administrative categories, she explores the skills, career paths, and perspectives these roles bring to the education, research and innovation sector.

The Cardiovascular Research Meeting 2027, organised by the LS² Section of Cardiovascular Biology, will take place on 13-14 January 2027 at the University of Bern. The annual meeting brings together more than 100 researchers working in cardiovascular and vascular biology, providing a platform for scientific exchange, discussion and networking within the Swiss research community.

The program features two keynote lectures by Grégoire Courtine (EPFL) and Jocelyne Bloch (CHUV), alongside speakers from Switzerland and Europe. The meeting will also highlight the work of young researchers: as in previous editions, selected submitted abstracts will be invited for short oral presentations, while other abstracts will be presented as posters. Two flash-presentation sessions will provide an additional opportunity for poster presenters to introduce their work in a single-slide format. Awards will be presented for the best oral and poster presentations.

The meeting will also include a conference dinner on 13 January, offering participants an opportunity to continue scientific discussions in a more informal setting and expand their professional networks.

The Young Scientists’ Satellite (YSS) is a dedicated event for early-career researchers, taking place on 9 February 2027 alongside the LS² Annual Meeting in Lausanne. This year’s programme puts career development and the realities of building a career in academia at the centre, featuring three inspiring keynote speakers who will share their personal and often non-linear journeys towards research independence.

A dedicated Career Q&A session will provide an opportunity to ask questions and discuss career choices, challenges and opportunities directly with the speakers. The afternoon will also feature scientific presentations and plenty of opportunities to connect, exchange ideas and build your network with fellow young scientists.

The meeting will feature internationally renowned keynote speakers, award lectures, the Young Scientists' Satellite (YSS), the PIs of Tomorrow session, industry exhibition, poster sessions, networking opportunities, and 12 scientific symposia covering topics from molecular and cellular biology to systems biology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, cardiovascular biology, biophysics, proteomics, and emerging research technologies.

Researchers are invited to submit an abstract for consideration as a poster and/or oral presentation. All accepted abstracts are eligible for the poster sessions, with opportunities to compete for Best Poster, Best Poster Design, and YSS Best Talk prizes. Abstract submission deadline: November 8, 2026. Registration is required before abstract submission.

The European Phagocyte Workshop 2027 will take place on 5-7 April 2027 at the Montreux Music & Convention Centre, bringing together researchers working across the diverse fields of phagocyte biology and innate immunity.
